Dr Who vs. The Doctor

For those of you who are constantly applauding yourselves as *true* fans of Doctor Who, because you can claim that Matt Smith plays "The Doctor" and not "Dr. Who" or "Doctor Who" please let me know what you see above William Hartnell's name here:

It wasn't until the Davison era that he started being credited as "The Doctor."  So you see, "The Doctor" and "Dr. Who" and "Doctor Who" are all the same fictional character.  The distinction feels to me a bit unnecessary, if you look at early scripts of the show, because they are all the same character, if you buy the mythology of the show in all its discontinuity, as you must, because let's face it -- you are a fan.
